Here you buy approx. 50 liters of unsorted sheep's wool.
The sheep's wool is not pressed or strongly compressed when it is stated at 50 liters.
Since the weight of unsorted sheep's wool can always fluctuate extremely, it is better to estimate how much volume you will get.
We fill the sheep's wool into a 50 liter bucket without pressing and then in a foil in a box for shipping.
Of course, the volume may decrease during transport. However, we usually ship more than ordered and our prices are extremely reasonable.
From the shepherd
If you have a shepherd near you, they are a good place to start. You can often get raw wool directly from the source for little money. If you have the choice, feel free to use dirt wool. This is wool contaminated with manure. This is not welcomed in the textile industry. But in your garden it is. Because that means more nutrients for your plants.
However, if there is no shepherd nearby, you can order the sheep's wool from us here.
Advantages of sheep wool as FERTILIZER
Sheep are cute animals and are a feast for the eyes, and not just for the skilled lover. In addition to their frugal character, they provide us with unique wool that you can also use directly in your garden! Because the wool of these fluffy contemporaries has something special. It is full of important nutrients that can help your plants grow. A layer of mulch made from sheep's wool can also protect your plants from drought. But you can find out how, where and why you should use sheep's wool in your garden here:
Why does sheep's wool belong in the garden?
Sheep's wool offers several advantages that make it very interesting for the garden. Especially if you want higher yields and healthier plants.
Sheep's wool contains many nutrients
Wool is a real powerhouse among fertilizers. It contains more than 7x as much potassium as compost and around 15x as much nitrogen. This makes it the champion among fertilizers and is completely natural in origin. It is particularly beneficial for cabbage plants such as cauliflower, Chinese cabbage or Brussels sprouts, but also tomatoes, cucumbers and, above all, our beloved pumpkins.
What about phosphate?
The attentive reader will have noticed that sheep's wool contains almost no phosphate. Do you have to fertilize here? Fortunately not! Most soils contain sufficient or even too much phosphate. So you don't actually have to worry about phosphate.×Hide note.
Advantage 2: Sheep's wool is a long-term fertilizer
What good is the best fertilizer if it is washed out with the first rain? Therefore, when fertilizing, it is not only the amount of nutrients that is important, but also how quickly they are released. But your sheep's wool is broken down by microorganisms over many months. This means it releases a continuous stream of nutrients that your plants can absorb.
How do I fertilize with sheep wool?
Of course, you can easily bury sheep's wool, similar to compost. If you want to protect soil life, you can also add the wool to the soil where it is being cultivated anyway. If you plant seedlings, you can simply put some sheep's wool in the planting hole and plant the seedling on top. The young plants then sit right at the source and can get the nutrients they need. Of course, sheep's wool is also suitable for your potted plants.
Sheep's wool is a water reservoir
Anyone who has ever washed their favorite wool sweater knows: sheep's wool absorbs a lot of water. This is exactly what it does in your garden and increases the water storage capacity of the soil. However, it can take some time for fresh sheep's wool to reach its full potential. So that the sheep don't get soaked in water, their wool is well greased with lanolin. However, this is quickly broken down in the soil and the wool becomes a water reservoir for your plants.
A little tip: If you have problems with drought, you should definitely think about using biochar!
How much sheep wool do I need?
The amount depends largely on the type of soil and which plants you want to grow. For heavy feeders such as tomatoes, it can be a little more, around 50 grams per plant. Plants with lower nutrient requirements need significantly less; here, a fraction of that is enough. If you are about to plant entire fruit trees, you can count on over 100 grams per fruit tree.
A long-term fertilizer
If the wool is applied as mulch, it decomposes more slowly and can therefore release nutrients for even longer. However, it could be that nest-building birds also use your wool mulch. This means you lose some wool, but you support the local ecosystem. If it becomes too much for you, you can simply cover the wool with some soil or compost.
Even if the wool is not undermined, it can score points in your garden. This makes them ideal for mulching. If the wool is very dense, a thin layer is enough. Simply place something around your seedlings to keep weeds low and the soil moist. This way you can also help your fruit trees grow. There are even extra wool fleeces that you can use for mulching.
Sheep's wool loosens the soil
If the soil is heavily compacted, it can quickly cause problems for your plants. Due to its fluffy structure, sheep's wool brings a lot of air into the soil. This stimulates important microorganisms and gives your plants the opportunity to stretch their roots. In addition, the rotting biomass also attracts larger macroorganisms, which further loosen the soil.
Sheep's wool has a high pH value
If you are struggling with soil that is too acidic, sheep's wool is right for you. Sheep's wool has a pH value of around 9 and helps balance acidic soil. However, keep in mind that the effect will not be particularly great due to the low density of sheep's wool. This also means that you should NOT use sheep's wool for plants that need acidic soil. So you shouldn't fertilize your blueberries with sheep's wool.
